But now we have voice calls for good pulls over hand pulled, irregular pulled targets; better ammunition, better trap guns with adjustable combs, adjustable length of pulls, adjustable ribs for point of impact.
And then, the ATA reduced the angles for perfection. Can you imagine going to a race track and having some horses starting 10 lengths ahead of the others? Having some golfers driving off the close tees and others off the pro tees which are further back? Going to a drag race where pro street cars are racing heads up against a stock Mustang, Camaro or Ferrari? That’s what has happened to ATA trapshooting. They took the average guy’s Lewis class money and gave it to the top shooters by changing Lewis class from 50/30/20 to 60/40. That’s a big change in the payouts for the top dog shooters. One other thing is hi-gun payouts. If there was three 100 straights, they take all the money in hi-gun payouts.
iTrapshooter.com: Gary, over the years, what has trapshooting brought to you?
Gary: It has brought friends from all over the country and I’ve had a chance to participate at some of the nicest trapshooting facilities. I have gained so much knowledge over the years on so many things like reloading powders and components, reloaders, trap guns and their quirks, release trigger settings, and pattern distances used by the different manufacturers. Shells and good and bad on them, such as brass bases vs. steel bases, which shells will eject most efficiently. I also do a lot of pattern testing.
I have met a lot of gun manufacturer’s reps and I have sent letters of some design changes I would like manufacturer’s to consider adding to their guns. I recently sent one to Browning and received positive results on it, and it was forwarded to their design team.
I am an Army expert marksman, in all types of weapons, from the M1 rifle, 45 cal pistol, 30 and 50 calachine gun up to the 90mm Cannon. Being I named myself Dr. Longshot, I shoot a lot of longshot reloads in buddy and games shoots, you cannot believe what 1 1/8 oz of #6s will do breaking targets 80+yards consistently without the recoil of 1 1/4-1 3/8ths-1 1/2 oz loads.
I simply love trapshooting under all conditions and weather, whether it is in the rain or a windstorm, snow, etc. Also, this is one sport where women compete equally with men, no other sport I know of can this happen.
My shooting opponent in the challenge, we are approximately the same age and are shooting almost identical scores. This is going to be a terrific shoot out, this challenge is for a good cause and I want to make as much money as possible for this fantastic charity.
iTrapshooter.com: Let’s talk a little about your equipment. What will you be taking to the “Grudge Match”?
Gary: I shoot a trap gun that patterns 18-20 inches high. There are a lot of trap guns advertising 120% patterns that won't make the grade. The only two trap guns that I ever shot 120% right out of the box was the Caesar Guerrini and the Silver Seitz. My highest handicap averages were with those two guns.
Over the years, I have shot ‘em all - K-80’s, Perazzi's, Caesar Guerrini, Silver Seitz, Ljutics, Brownings, BT-99, BT-99Plus, Berettas, 680-682-DT-10. Blaser has the best factory weight balancing system of any gun on the market.
I am now shooting a Silver Seitz with the #3 Adjustable rib. This gun has the Soft Touch System on it with upgraded wood and a factory release trigger which has one of the fastest lock times on the market. It has adjustability in the factory trigger that no other manufacturer can come close to. To me, the Silver Seitz feels like a Winchester Model 12, it feels a part of me. It shoots exactly where I want it to shoot and when I want it to shoot.
To brag a little to Big Don, I call my Silver Seitz gun with the #3 high shooting rib, and release trigger presently set at 60oz set and 30oz release, my WHUPASS GUN, but Big Don probably has one, too. Mine is AMERICAN MADE. It is 100% American Made and by a military arms manufacturer. Ha-ha, just rubbing it in a little, Big Don.
iTrapshooter.com: It sounds like you are ready for trapshooting in Ohio. Thanks for talking trap, Gary and congratulations again on stepping up to help important causes.
Gary: LET THE GRUDGE MATCH BEGIN, and good luck BIG DON The All American vs. DR.LONGSHOT the Games Shooter.
